GENERAL MEETING MINUTES
SETX USAFA PARENTS’
ASSOCIATION
JULY 25, 2004
LOCATION-FUDRUCKERS - THE
WOODLANDS
President, John DeFilippo,
called the meeting to order at 2:50 p.m. after motion was made, seconded and
unanimously approved.
John gave an overview of
what our organization is about - sharing information between parents, our
association and the academy; to learn about regular Air Force rules, etc., and
most importantly, to support our cadets and each other.
John also read the letters
from General Rosa and General Weida sharing their
appreciation for receiving the 2004 coin presented to our freshman cadets.
At our last meeting a
motion was put forth and approved in support of an advisory committee. The idea
behind the committee is to have a list of names of parents who were not
officers and that did not hold another position on the board that would be
willing to help out. So far, no one has signed up.
John asked for a
Treasurer’s report from Nelly Pena. Nelly reported there was presently a
balance of $843.00.
John then asked Matt Godar,
Communications, for an update. Matt asked members to give him any address,
phone, e-mail changes for themselves and their cadets.
John and Peggy Omahundro, Vice Presidents, reported our next meeting would
be at Nit Noi Thai Restaurant off FM 1960, hosted
again by Doi Heckler. Proposed date of meeting is
October 24, 2004; however, date may change. Parents were also reminded this
would be the meeting to pack our Halloween treat boxes for our cadets and to
ask parents to bring plenty of candy and other treats.
Thanks
was
also given to John and Peggy for hosting the appointee party at their house.
Many appointees came, ate, talked and had an all around great time.
Donda Thomasson
reported on ticket sales for the game on Parents’ Weekend - 140 tickets in all.
Donda also stated she had requests for extra tickets
and asked that if any of us who had already purchased had extras, to let her
know.
Mike Berry reported on the
tailgate. We are joining in with
Report from Military Ball
Committee - The ball will be December 26, 2004 at the Mariott
in Sugarland. Army hosting.
Marylyn DeFilippo stated she had donation letters available for members to pick up
and asked that we work hard to get donations to help make this a memorable
occasion for all the cadets. Ball representatives will be at our next meeting
to accept donations and hand out invitations.
Louianne Reeves was named as the ‘08
Class Representative.
ALO, Lt. Col Ray Taylor was
given the floor. Lt. Taylor gave a brief overview on recent Academy news and
happenings. The average SAT for the Class of ‘08 was 1300 and the average GPA
was 3.9. In the recent cheating scandal
- 1 cadet was dismissed and 6 were disciplined. The Academy has implemented the
“officer development system” - meaning the Academy has decided to treat cadets
more like regular Air Force on active duty as far as training, discipline -
they will train as an officer on active duty. There is now a four class system
- each class has a training objective. Academy is taking a tougher stance on
alcohol and drugs. Lt. Col Taylor also stated that should a cadet be dismissed
or out processed for any reason - to contact him or our association president.
The cadet still has a future - ROTC scholarships, etc.
John reported that
“acceptance” would be August 10, 2004. Parents can begin sending “care”
packages and cadets can begin using cell phones after that date.
Motion was made, seconded
and unanimously carried to approve the April, 2004 minutes.
Motion was made, seconded
and unanimously carried to adjourn the meeting. Meeting adjourned at 4:08 p.m.
